DRIVE Conference 2014 https://drive.wngfrmnt.com Just another WordPress site Tue, 25 Mar 2014 03:28:56 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Closing Keynote | The Video Genome Project: A Fireside Chat with SDI’s Xavier Kochhar https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/closing-keynote-the-video-genome-project-a-fireside-chat-with-sdis-xavier-kochhar/ https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/closing-keynote-the-video-genome-project-a-fireside-chat-with-sdis-xavier-kochhar/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2014 23:20:19 +0000 http://drive.wngfrmnt.com/?p=229 Have you ever wondered why it is easier to search for an Italian restaurant in your neighborhood, compare plane tickets on multiple airlines, avoid traffic jams in real-time, or even be introduced to the love of your life with just with a swipe of your finger, than it is to find a film or TV show when, where, and how you want it? Other industries have been utilizing information about their consumers, products, and services to deliver rich user experiences in far more sophisticated ways than we have historically done so in Hollywood. So why is it that today’s even most sophisticated video content curation tools (discovery, search, recommendation, personalization) barely scratch the surface?

The answer lies in the information about and within the content itself: the metadata at its core, most granular levels. If this metadata did exist in the world and we could find it, organize it, and make it usable, then maybe we could help enhance how we experience our favorite movies, tv shows, and online videos. We could better find the right piece of content. Or perhaps, more importantly,…the right piece of content could find us.

Well, now we can.

Find out how as we peek behind the curtain of the Video Genome Project™ during this exclusive fireside chat with SDI’s Xavier Kochhar.

Why do our charts suck and what to do about it? https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/why-do-our-charts-suck-and-what-to-do-about-it/ https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/why-do-our-charts-suck-and-what-to-do-about-it/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2014 22:10:19 +0000 http://drive.wngfrmnt.com/?p=276 Presenting data should be simple, yet we fail at communicating simply. 30-minutes go by and you are still trying to understand the objective of a chart, which is masked by 3-D objects, exploding slices, and extensive color schemes. You will learn in this session: how to avoid some mistakes and make your charts informative and actionable, not “interesting.”

Building Your Data Warehouse – Foundation for Your Analytics https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/building-your-data-warehouse-foundation-for-your-analytics/ https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/building-your-data-warehouse-foundation-for-your-analytics/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2014 21:00:35 +0000 http://drive.wngfrmnt.com/?p=273 Your data warehouse – data mart – reporting database, however you want to slice it, is the single most important foundation for creating reports and ultimately using analytical tools for data discovery.

Some of the more “modern” tools such as Reporting Services, Tableau, Excel’s Power Pivot and others are dramatically changing the way we need to think about how we design the underlying data structures to make the use of these new tools for our user communities of analysts and decision makers.

Many of the old constraints of data cubes, complex-star schemas and long complex planning and design cycles for data warehouses need to be rethought and changed to a more flexible and agile development methodology.

In this session we’ll look at some concepts and show some practical examples of how to design a few underlying data warehouse tables to support ease of use in analytical tools and help you reduce the amount of effort in creating the data structures you need in your data warehouse.

Shared measurement systems for collective impact: best practices and lessons learned https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/shared-measurement-systems-for-collective-impact-best-practices-and-lessons-learned/ https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/shared-measurement-systems-for-collective-impact-best-practices-and-lessons-learned/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2014 21:00:34 +0000 http://drive.wngfrmnt.com/?p=330 Shared measurements systems are one of the keys to a collective impact effort. This session offers insight into how technology solutions can support a collective impact effort and offers best practices for implementing shared measurement systems.

This talk focuses on an affordable housing collective impact initiative involving over 50 nonprofits and cities. The project includes a program management tool that allows affordable housing organizations to manage day-to-day work efficiently, while providing the centralized data for quantitative reports requested by funders and to use for peer group evaluation. The data provides an organization with program performance metrics relative to its peers across the country, allowing best practices to become part of the dialogue among organizations. This talk will discuss the best practices and lessons learned that are applicable to other collective impact efforts.

Data and analytics at speed (my time at Zulily) https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/data-and-analytics-at-speed-my-time-at-zulily/ https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/data-and-analytics-at-speed-my-time-at-zulily/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2014 21:00:30 +0000 http://drive.wngfrmnt.com/?p=248 I had the chance to experience a wonderful success story during my time at zulily. A key driver of zulily’s success was speed. Having to perform analytics and drive data architecture at speed introduced very interesting challenges, My talk covers a few of the lessons that I learned along the way.

Predictive Modeling in Fundraising: Applications & Approaches https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/predictive-modeling-in-fundraising-applications-approaches/ https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/predictive-modeling-in-fundraising-applications-approaches/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2014 21:00:05 +0000 http://drive.wngfrmnt.com/?p=221 The tools needed to build predictive models describing donor behavior are getting easier to use all the time. But getting fundraisers excited about the potential impact these models can have on the fundraising program may take some doing. In this presentation he’ll share some examples of ways to demonstrate the usefulness of models that answer the fundraisers most basic questions: who will give and how much will they give.

Logins and passwords – What you need to know about Identity Management in Higher Ed https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/logins-and-passwords-what-you-need-to-know-about-identity-management-in-higher-ed/ https://drive.wngfrmnt.com/logins-and-passwords-what-you-need-to-know-about-identity-management-in-higher-ed/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2014 21:00:03 +0000 http://drive.wngfrmnt.com/?p=299 Protecting our valuable Alumni and Donor data is one of the most important things we do. In this session we’re going to review the technology behind the login screen so you better understand how this protects your data and more importantly, what risks and limitations still exist.

We’re going to keep this a kind of high level but still giving you a good understanding of the important technologies, how they work together and why this is important for you to understand.
